Information Technology - The tools used
to perform the work
There is a wealth of undiscovered opportunities within your grasp --
without adding a new information technology system. Technology is an area where
most companies spend a lot of money to enhance their operations.
Money well spent in most cases, but not usually obtaining the full
benefit. It is important to |
|
|
determine the return on
investment (ROI)
from your technology initiatives, but it is essential
to go further.
Here's the issue -- emphasis is placed on doing
the proper due diligence for the next investment to ensure a good ROI decision is made. There is no
question that this is a wise and necessary practice, but it is not enough (and
short-sided).
Go the next step - beyond the implementation. What
most organizations are not talking about, but should, is the fact that most information technology
implementations do not result in the systems being fully utilized
-- which is not
necessarily the fault of the IT project.

You can obtain a great ROI
but still not realize the most from the effort. And for those investments
with a questionable return, there is still hope. It is not a
matter of IF there are opportunities to get more out of your
information technology, just where to
look. Your organization will be
more effective if you are utilizing every aspect of your technology tools.

The Perfect Project Manager
by Richard Lowe
Editorial Note: Following is some great information about
being a project manager. If you play the role of project manager or
are responsible for the performance of a project manager (or
multiple project managers), you will find valuable information here.
The list of what makes a good project manager is quite
interesting. Does it describe you or your staff?
Kay
Graham-Gilbert
I've been working in the computer industry now for over 23 years. During that time, I've had the unfortunate circumstance to work under many incompetent project managers. I don't mean the word incompetent as an insult - it's just that in the Information Technology industry, we tend to promote programmers, engineers and analysts to management and supervisory positions and, well, just expect them to do well.
I've never really understood how anyone can expect a person who is trained as a programmer to suddenly be able to manage a project. It takes years and years of specialized training to become just a good project manager, much less an excellent one. In fact, I would say, having managed my own share of projects, that this is one of the downright hardest things anyone can do.

The
Top Three Problems IT Managers Face and How to Overcome Them
This expansion of the IT job realm has left many IT managers
juggling new challenges. While the problems, in and of themselves,
might appear overwhelming, there are simple, proven ways to rise
above them.
Why
Businesses Need to Start Nurturing Collective Wisdom
If you are a small, medium or large business, and you don’t have a
method in place for harnessing and managing your organization’s
collective knowledge, you may be losing opportunities for significant
revenue enhancement. According to a study by the Delphi Group, less than
20 percent of knowledge available to an enterprise is actually used.
Corporate Change and Modern
Technology at the Cutting Edge of the New Frontier
Most people drive a car and use all the gears; with technology most
people seem to use 1st and maybe 2nd gear but do not even know that it

workplace and at home. The problem is that most humans have not caught
up with...

Technology Should Be a
Long-Term Investment -- Feel Good About IT
The task of researching software products
and service providers can be so daunting that projects are often waylaid
until an organization finds itself making critical business decisions
during a crisis. Inaction is a course of action which can cost an
organization both in terms of employee morale and lost financial
resources. Typically a company will use the cost of the proposed project
as a deterrent to decision making. Before answering that you can't
afford to, ask yourself if you can afford not to.
